Designing a Wallhanging for Spoonflower
For those of us that make repeating patterns each week for Spoonflower, being asked to make a Wallhanging for them throws many designers for a loop. The entries for these challenges are less than half the usual number! This presents a great opportunity to enter a challenge with less competition, if you’re up for the learning curve. You can find the instructions from Spoonflower at this link. Here’s how I do it!
Step 1
Download the template provided in the link above. Hint: your canvas will need to be 2700×4050 pixels. I design in Procreate on my iPad, so I just import the template into Procreate and go from there. It‘ll look like this when you open it…
Step 2
Create your work of art! (but keep all the most critical design elements in the darkest grey zone) The theme this week was “witty word play.” I painted a bird for a birthday card for my sister in law, and I knew I wanted to incorporate it. It was just screaming for a witty caption, right??
I brainstormed and thought I’d go with something about trying to stay young. My friend suggested something along the lines of this gif…
That was exactly the vibe I was going for. 🤣 But ultimately, as you’ll see below, I decided my little bird was actually a night owl…
Worms ARE gross. Here’s how my little dude looks on the mock-up.
Step 3
Turn your canvas sideways like this…
And then export your file as a jpeg or png.
Step 4
Now upload your file to Spoonflower, and don’t forget to add this tag right here…
“sfrotate” tells Spoonflower to place your design properly on the Wallhanging mock-ups. Super important!
