& the Fika Spoonflower Design Challenge
A new week and a new design challenge! This one made me drool (hence the sourdough monkey bread recipe card you’ll find in this post). Fika is a Swedish word for ”a coffee break with friends.” Books have been written on the concept! For a proper fika experience, you need 1) coffee 2) beautifully presented Swedish baked goods 3) friends or family to sit down and visit with. Let the heart-to-hearts commence! I’m not Swedish, but I can fully get behind this concept. My husband is about as Finnish as one can get, and a lot of Finnish baked goods are very similar to Swedish recipes. They both rely heavily on cardamom! But first, the fabric design…
Process
I started by looking up some inspirational images. I can tell you, this made me HUNGRY!
From these, I got a feel for the colors and shapes common to Scandinavian design. Ikea, anyone? I then sketched out some rough ideas. Tables set with lovely plates? Coffee mugs all around? I ended up settling on a stenciled design of plates set with various baked good.
Sourdough Monkey Bread Recipe
Now, like I said, this made me crave cardamom! I’ve been on a sourdough kick for the last couple years, so I pulled out my starter and came up with a recipe. It ended up being DELICIOUS, so I thought I would share it with y’all.
Recipe Tips
- Pre-ground cardamom is fine, but if you really want a punch of flavor, pick up some cardamom pods. Pop the pods open and grind the seeds in your coffee grinder. (Bonus, your next batch of coffee will taste amazing!)
- If you don’t have sourdough or just don’t want to wait a day to eat these, use 2 tsps of instant yeast in place of the starter. Then let your dough raise until double (probably an hour or two) before forming the balls to roll in your sugar mixture.
