Spoonflower Calendar Design Process
It feels a little premature to be designing a calendar for next year…like setting up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving…but the retail world plans ahead. The print on demand fabric website Spoonflower has to get their designs ready for the new year now. So this week, designers were tasked with designing for Wallhanging calendars.
In contrast to some weeks, my first sketch ended up being the idea I wanted to go with. They are flower lights or flower “bulbs.” 😆 Here’s the overall process in Timelapse form…
Initially, the flowers were going to be loose and painterly, along with the light from the “lamps.” But after seeing how messy it was looking, I pivoted to clean lines. As you can see from the Timelapse below, the layers of the “lamp light” were COMPLEX. I could feel my designer muscles growing as I simplified the image.
Color Options
Now, as much as I loved this muted, sophisticated palette, I know the voters prefer bright, grabby colors. So I whipped up some more options and promptly got a bad case of indecision.
After polling friends and family, I decided to roll the dice on the rainbow version. 🌈 God knows how to put together wonderful colors, doesn’t He? They look the most like lamps in a dark room too, don’t they? This design took me over 10 HOURS to complete…hours that were stolen between homeschooling 6 children and tending a baby…hours between meals and errands and houseguests…I honestly don’t know where they came from. But I know that I love art. It’s such a pleasure to sit down and draw for a few minutes here and there.
