Process
Each year, Spoonflower designs a challenge around Pantone’s color of the Year. This year’s color is “Viva Magenta.” A twist this year is that they also specified the exact color palette we must use with the color of the year. As you can see, the rest of the colors are extremely mellow. Not easy! They asked that the color of the year be the “dominant” color in the design, and I chose to do this by making it the color of the most important features.
Themes for the designs needed to represent “breaking boundaries.” I anticipate lots of political and cultural messaging. But I chose to avoid all that and go with something fun! My design features mid-century-style rockets breaking through the clouds! It has satellites racing through space, and a flag planted on the moon. While it was hard to get contrast with all those muted colors, I think it ended up being something I would thoroughly enjoy seeing in a little boy’s room.

Voting
In addition to the usual prizes, the top ten winners of this challenge also receive a minky blanket made with their fabric design (a value of nearly $200!). Wouldn’t that be fun!? To vote for my design (and any others that catch your eye), go to the Pantone Color of the Year 2023 Design Challenge page. Please be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of the entries, or they don’t count your vote. Voting begins today and ends on January 3rd at 3 pm. Winners announced on the 5th. I’ll post my result here!
Results:
I ranked 364/1401. Not high enough to win a blanket, but pretty decent considering the huge amount of entries. Thank you for voting!!
